Tonganoxie (pronounced) is a city in Leavenworth County, Kansas, United States. It was named for a local Native American Chief from the Delaware Tribe whose name means "shorty" in the Delaware language. The city is located at 39°632N 95°513W (39.108880, -95.086885). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.67 square miles (9.51 km²) of which 3.66 square miles is land and 0.01 sq miles (0.03km²) is water. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 5,573, with a population density of 1,365.0 per square mile (527.0/km²). The racial makeup of theCity was 95.2% White, 1.0% African American, 0.7% Native American,0.4% Asian, 0,1% Pacific Islander, and 2.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.3% of the population. The median income for a household in the city in 2010 was $44,278, and the city median for a family in 2011 was $50,816. History
Tonganoxie was named for a local Native American Chief from the Delaware Tribe whose name means "shorty" in the Delaware language. The city was incorporated as a city in 1871. It was platted in 1866 and named for the Chief. The town has a population of about 2,000. It is located on the Delaware River, which runs through the city. It also has a lake, which was named after the Chief of the Delaware tribe, who lived in the area in the early 1800s. It has a post office with a ZIP code of 7053. The mayor of Tonganoxies was William "Bill" Smith, who served as mayor from 1871 to 1874. He was elected to a second term in 1874, and was re-elected in 1876 and 1878. The current mayor is Robert "Bob" Brown, who was elected in 1878 and served from 1879 to 1883, and is a former mayor of the town. The community has a history of fighting for women's rights and for the rights of the LGBT community, which has led to the creation of the city's first women's center. The first woman to serve as mayor was Elizabeth "Betty" Johnson, who took office in 1879. The last woman to be mayor was Sarah "Shelley" Johnson in 1881. The name of the current mayor, Mary "Mamie" Hogue, was born in 1858 and was married in 1883.
