Claflin is a city in Barton County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 562. The city was officially organized in response to Missouri Pacific Railroad plans for a branch line to come through the area. Claflin was incorporated by order of the Barton County Commissioners on July 18, 1901, and the first election was held on August 2, 1901. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.33 square miles (0.85 km²), all of it land. The Santa Fe Trail contributed to American settlement inarton County, as it did throughout Kansas and much of the southern Great Plains. The first settlement claim recorded in the area was made by George Platt in 1870. This claim was divided and re-entered, eventually being sold to J. H. Williamson in 1875, and becoming the town of Claf Lin. The town was named after his wife, Adelia Maria Clafflin. The community was incorporated in 1901 and is located on the banks of the Little Missouri River. It is located near the junction of the Missouri River and the Kansas Turnpike, which runs through the city. The Missouri River is a tributary of the Platte River, which flows through the center of the town and into the Kansas City, Kansas area. It was once known as the "Little Missouri River" and was once called the "Missouri River" or "Little Kansas River".

History

It was once known as Giles City, after landowner Stelle Giles, who owned the station on the south side of the tracks. The station was originally named Giles City after the landowner, William Albro Giles, son of Stella Giles. In 1887, the town company filed the townsite with the Barton Co Register of Deeds on March 31, 1887. The land for the town was purchased on the north side of. the tracks from J.H. Williamson.

Geography

The city is located on the Mississippi River, which runs through the center of the city. It is the only city in the state to have a population of more than 1,000. It was the site of the World War II Battle of the Bulge, which took place in World War I. The town was named after the town of the same name, which was founded in 1854. It has a population in excess of 1,200. The population of the town was 1,100 at the time of the 2010 U.N. Census, and is expected to rise to 1,300 by the 2014 U.n. Census. The area has a history of being heavily affected by the Spanish-American War, which ended in 1859. It also suffered through the Second World War, during which time it was known as "The Bulge" The city's name is derived from the word "bulge", which means "bullet" or "bunker" and refers to the area where it was located at the start of the war. The word "bilge" is also used to refer to the town's name, as well as the area in which it was once located, "Bilbao", which was also known as the "Bulbao" and "Bolivia" The town is located in the Southwestern United States.

The National Guard is based in Fort Worth, Texas, which has its own base of operations in the Fort Worth metropolitan area. The U.N. has a presence in the region as well as in the state of Texas, where it has a military base that is under the command of the Texas National Guard and the Texas State Guard. The state's military base is based at Fort Worth and has a national guard base of its own. It also has a regional military base in the San Antonio, Texas area, which was the site of the World War II.

Education

The community is served by Central Plains USD 112 public school district. The Central Plains High School mascot is the "Oilers" and current principal is Toby Holmes. As the Claflin Wildcats, they won the Kansas State High School 8-Man DII football championship in 1991 and 1992 as well as the 2-1Afootball championship in 1997, 1998 and 1999. The school and mascot were known as theclaflin High School "Wildcats" before a consolidation. The district is currently ranked #1 for their classification, and a National ranking of #8 in the country. The community is also home to the Central Plains Junior/Senior High School, which was founded in the 1970s. The junior/senior high school has a mascot of the same name, the "Junior Oiler", and the school is located in the town of Central Plains, Kansas. The town has a population of about 2,000 and is in the central part of the Kansas Panhandle. It is located on the Kansas-Oklahoma border and is near the junction of Kansas, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma Mississippi and Oklahoma Inland Streams. It was also the site of the World War II Battle of the Bulge, which took place in World War I and II. It has been home to a number of notable institutions, including the U.S. Air Force, the University of Missouri, and the University of Kansas and Kansas State High School.
