La Crosse is a city in and the county seat of Rush County, Kansas, United States. The city was founded in 1876 and named after the city of La Crosse, Wisconsin. On May 25, 2012, an EF-1 tornado caused about four blocks of significant damage, and two businesses were destroyed. La Crosse was founded in 1876, was named after the city of La Crosse, Wisconsin. In the 1960s, the city became a regional center of barbed wire collecting. The city is also known as "The Barbed Wire Capital of the World" because of its reputation as a collecting center for barbed wires. It is located on the banks of the Wisconsin River, which runs through the center of the city. The town has a population of about 4,000. It was the site of the deadliest tornado in U.S. history, with more than 1,000 people killed in the May 2012 twister. It also hosted the World Series of Poker, which ended in a tie for the title of world's most expensive sports event. It has been the home of the National Football League's Wisconsin Alumni Association, which has a membership of more than 2,000 members. The La Crossee High School football team won the state championship in 2010 and 2011. The team was named the Wisconsin High School Football Team of the Year for the second year in a row.
